Freebase vs Salt Nic: Which E-Liquid Should You Get?

Air Factory Berry Rush in 60mL freebase and 30mL salt nic, each shown with its box
Same flavor, two formats: Berry Rush 60mL freebase (left) and 30mL salt nic (right).

If you’ve ever stood there trying to decide between a 60mL bottle at 3mg and a 30mL bottle at 36mg, you’re not alone. Freebase and salt nic are both e-liquid. They’re just made for different setups. Here’s the quick version, then the details.

The short answer

  • Using a tank or a bigger device that makes big clouds? Get freebase.
  • Using a pod system or a small mouth-to-lung device? Get salt nic.
  • Don’t want to refill anything? Grab a disposable.
Chart: a tank uses 60mL freebase at 3mg or 6mg, a pod system uses 30mL salt nic at 18mg or 36mg, and the 20K disposable needs no refills
Match the liquid to the device: freebase for tanks, salt nic for pods, or a disposable if you don't want to refill.

What’s the difference?

Freebase is the classic e-liquid. It comes in lower strengths, like 3mg and 6mg, and it’s made for tanks and direct-lung vaping where you’re pulling a lot of vapor with each hit. Air Factory freebase comes in 60mL bottles, and Air Factory recommends using it in devices up to 40 watts.

Salt nic (nicotine salt) is nicotine bound with an acid, which makes it smoother at higher strengths. That’s why salt nic comes in strengths like 18mg and 36mg. It’s made for pod systems and low-wattage mouth-to-lung devices, where you take smaller hits. Air Factory salt nic comes in 30mL bottles.

Can I put salt nic in my tank?

No. Salt nic is not made for sub-ohm tanks or high-wattage devices. Air Factory’s own label says “Not for sub-ohm use.” If you’ve got a tank, stick with freebase.

How do I pick a strength?

For freebase, 3mg is the lighter option and 6mg is stronger. For salt nic, 18mg is the lighter option and 36mg is stronger. If you’re not sure, start with the lower one. You can always go up.

Same flavor, either way

Most Air Factory flavors come in both formats, so you don’t have to give up your favorite to switch devices. Berry Rush, Blue Razz, Blue Razz Ice, Strawberry Kiwi, Mystery, Kookie Krunch, Custard Tobacco, Tobacco, Menthol and Mint all come in 60mL freebase and 30mL salt nic.

What about Nixodine?

Nixodine Air Factory is Air Factory’s tobacco-free line, made with Nixodine. It comes in 30mL bottles in Blue Razz, Mint, Menthol, Tobacco and Unflavored, in 18mg, 35mg or 50mg. The label says not to use it with tobacco or nicotine products, or mix it with other liquids.

And disposables?

If you’d rather skip bottles and refills, the Air Factory 20K disposable comes pre-filled with up to 20,000 puffs at 5% nicotine, with Boost and Eco modes and a screen that shows battery and e-liquid left.
